Strategy is all about how an organisation meets its challenges and requires a set of decisions that balance the a number of objectives against a set of constraints. It requires an understanding of the current capabilities of the current organisation and an ability to negotiate changes within the constraints.
The best tool I’ve come across for strategy development is the Wardley Map. The reason for this is that it is the only tool I’ve come across that allows you to think like a real strategist. It allows leaders to truly understand the various needs and ask some serious questions about the disposition of available resources
The example below shows a Wardley Map against a typical Design and Transition Lifecycle, which the map showing the capabilities, relationships and evolution within Service Design and Transition

Map Overview
At the top of the map, we have the customer requirement, which acts as an anchor. Below this, we see the value chain for Designing and Transitioning services.
The X Axis shows the value chain moving north to south, with the north being most visible to the end user. The Y Axis shows the evolution of each capability as it moves from its initial inception (genesis) through to its maturity when it becomes more widespread (commodity)
